Lilies for Helen - I made this digital painting o Lilies for Helen -
I made this digital painting of lilies for a card for my Grandmother's birthday. When I was growing up, her house had a vibrant display of yellow and orange lilies out front every summer. She'll be 98(!!) next week and it's amazing and delightful to still have her around. Especially since she's as sharp as the 10 smartest people you know put together.

Needed a fix of good Jewish food, so @gregclow and Needed a fix of good Jewish food, so @gregclow and I headed waaay north today to visit @unitedbakers restaurant.

My love of Eastern European Ashkenazi cuisine stems from my time living in Kensington Market back in the 80s when @tanyacheex, @paulsalsman and I would hit Switzer’s on Spadina Avenue and eat our way through the dairy restaurant menu with the guidance of the waitresses there. (Blintzes! Egg creams! I miss that place!)

Today’s feast included my favourite, gefilte fish, along with latkes, Nova lox and borscht.

We then headed north a few blocks to the kosher grocers and came home with more of the same plus challah, smoked meat and rugulah.

Had some lovely chats with people every place we went and it was a wonderfully delightful day.
Absolutely gutted to learn this morning that Canad Absolutely gutted to learn this morning that Canadian cookbook icon Jean Pare passed away on December 24th at the age of 95.

Canadians of a certain age will remember her Company's Coming cookbook series, which spanned over 200 titles. Mostly found in drug stores and department stores, these inexpensive, cerlox-bound collections were ubiquitous in most Canadian homes.

The recipes didn't always hold up - I was perusing "150 Delicious Squares" back before Christmas and came across a couple of "no-cook" recipes that included a raw egg. And Pare's attempts at vegetarian cuisine were a bit off the mark. But mostly she offered easy to follow, accessible recipes that taught many Canadians how to navigate a recipe, and a kitchen.

A few years ago I was briefly running a cookbook review site and was interviewed about my favourite cookbooks and I think I broke the writer's head when I gushed about Pare and her Quebecois colleague Madame Benoit. (Canadian, eh?)

I'll continue to refer to her collections for all manner of baked goods (it really is a shame people don't make fancy squares much anymore), because most of what she offered was good, solid recipes. And her role as a mentor and guide for so many Canadian home cooks can never be understated.

RIP Jean Pare - thanks for the squares. And cookies, and muffins and scones...
