The Misanthrope’s Guide to Covid Grocery Shopping

At 8 weeks and counting, you’d think we’d have the basics figured out. After all, for most of us, if we don’t have a dog, grocery shopping is the only reason to leave the house. And maybe because purchasing essentials is the only reason we’re leaving the house, interacting with others has become kind of terrifying.

Headlines such as “Why shopping for groceries is no longer fun” or “We’ll never shop for groceries the same way again” make it clear that a meandering stroll through the aisles is now a thing of the past. There is no lingering, no reading labels, no picking out the non-bruised apples. You need to get in there (after standing for 45 minutes in line), get your stuff, and get out as fast as possible.

Happy Anniversary to Centro (2472 Yonge Street), the restaurant celebrates 25 years in business this year. Plans are in the works for a blow-out party in November – get yourself on the mailing list.

Corks at Longos (15 York Street) will be tapping their first cask on April 13th. The brew is reportedly a hop bomb from Black Oak Brewing.

Longo’s Maple Leaf Square – Something For Everyone

In the food community, many of us have love/hate relationships with supermarkets. Corporate-minded and stocked with processed food, the supermarket is a place we prefer to avoid, shopping instead at farmers’ markets or small family-owned artisanal food shops where the focus is on fresh, wholesome and delicious products. But what if that actually described your local supermarket?

Longo’s has been around since 1956, and just opened their 23rd store. Yet this company that employs more than 4000 people is still family-owned and run. And while their latest venture, the 48,000 square foot store that opened yesterday at Maple Leaf Square, is most definitely a supermarket, they’ve taken great care to ensure that high quality, artisanal food is a priority.
