Flower Child

So florals are big this spring. They’re showing up on everything from dresses to pants to bags.

I’ve always been big on florals. Maybe not on fabric – the wrong print can make the wrong person look like they’re wearing Aunt Bertha’s curtains – but who doesn’t love having flowers in their life? Living in a place without a garden of my own, I desperately miss having fresh flowers. I try to buy cut flowers but a certain family member seems to consider them salad.

Realizing these are fake, the cat contents herself to simply be the queen of the Rose Parade, although she was really hoping for a tasty snack.

I came up with the idea for a flower-covered straw bag about 10 or 12 years ago. I made two different styles and carried them both every summer, receiving many compliments each time I took one out in public. But in the past year, the handles on both bags gave out. I couldn’t be without a flower-covered bag, so last weekend that cat and I made a new one.

I found a basic straw bag in Chinatown, and re-purposed most of the flowers from one of the old bags, filling in the gaps with some new blooms to jazz it up.

And now I’m ready for summer. And it turns out, for once in my life, I’m actually on trend. How about that?
