Back in the days when I ran a food and drink websi Back in the days when I ran a food and drink website, I regularly had people applying to write for me who intentionally emulated the style of Anthony Bourdain. When I would reply to them and tell them to find their own voice, they would get angry at me. “I want to be the next Bourdain!” they’d write back emphatically. But here’s the thing, we only ever needed one Bourdain. Everything else, every person who wrote anything in a style of flowery, meandering prose punctuated with sharpish observations of the world, would always be second rate. Solely because they weren’t Anthony Bourdain. And it wasn’t that their stories, or observations, were bad, or even badly written; it was just hard to get past how desperately they were trying to be like someone else.

Such is the case with writers who emulate Jane Austen.

(It's a fun regency romance, but it needed to find its own voice.)

Bought a @zara gift card for my niece for her birt Bought a @zara gift card for my niece for her birthday. I had it shipped to me so I could include it with a card. This was all the packaging.

The card and instructions (lower right) came in a 3-part gift box (upper right), about the size you’d put a small piece of jewelry in. I get this because some people might want to wrap it, it being a gift and all. The gift box was inside an envelope (left) which was wrapped in tissue paper (top left) and all of that came in a box (underneath) roughly 8”x11”.

Holy overpackaged much??
It’s technically all recyclable, but this is just crazy. Especially since I am literally only going to include the gift card and instructions. Not impressed, Zara.

How gorgeous are these pink spiny scallops? Steame How gorgeous are these pink spiny scallops? Steamed with white wine, lemon, garlic and butter, these flash frozen scallops from @skipperotto were absolutely delicious.

I want to wash all the shells and make silly jewelry or something, they’re too pretty to throw away.

On our way to the @techniques_berlin / @bang_elekt On our way to the @techniques_berlin / @bang_elektronika show on Friday night, we popped into @bouffe_toronto for cocktails and a quick bite. Oysters and this marvellous steak tartare were complemented by a lavender/gin/champagne cocktail. Really excited to see so many French restaurants opening (or returning) in Toronto, and excited to head back to Bouffe to try the rest of the menu.
